The Communist Party calls for more transparency in public finances.

The Communist Party of Malta deplores what have occurred recently in Parliament. An important matter, such as public finances in Parliament ended up in a partisan political squabble. The present situation, of the country's finances, is the result of the neoliberal policies upheld by the previous administration, which had always hid the state of the financial situation.

"The reduction in the rate of income tax from 35% to 25% for those earning between € 20,000 and € 60,000 will continue to put down the country's finances. Government revenues will decline, increasing the deficit, and the government will be forced to reduce the capital expenditure, in the social and educational fields ".

The party states that it "disagrees with the speech of the honorable Minister Edward Scicluna where he attributed  the increase in the deficit to the signing of collective agreements at the beginning of this year".

"It would be fairer if the Parliament gave a more clearer picture of the impact that this tax reduction, would leave on public finances", concluded the Communist Party of Malta.

“GMO Free Europe”

The Communist Party of Malta supports the initiative taken by various organisations to organise a protest march against Monsanto.

The Party said that “US recently had passed a law that gave the right to companies to sell genetically-modified (GM) seeds even when federal courts have blocked them from doing so, due to health or environmental reason. According to reports, Monsanto was directly involved in crafting this legislation”.

“The Government should put pressure on European Union for a Europe free from the cultivation and production of GMOs. European Union should not succumb to pressure from multinationals, but instead should safeguard ecological sustainability and agricultural diversity”, concluded the Party.

Communist Party’s message for Worker’s Day

The Communist Party of Malta affirms that “the 1st of May, (Worker’s Day), is the day that symbolizes the struggle of the working class against the exploitation brought about by the capitalist system, a system based on the maximisation of profit without the least regard for the welfare or well-being of the majority of the people.
“In more simple terms, it symbolizes the fight against a new kind of exploitation, that of precarious employment, low wages, the struggle against the privatisation of public services and utilities, and against imperialist wars of aggression to extend the control of the world’s natural resources, into fewer hands”.

“In fact, the economic crisis has been created by the financial institutions, so that the capitalist system takes complete control of public services through privatization scheme, putting forward its agenda for the deregulation of the labour market, where precarious employment becomes the order of the day”.

The Communist Party maintains that “not only, the working class has not disappeared, but it is growing more in number and quality. Precariousness is spreading in every sector of the labour market, from the cleaning sector, up to managerial staff. The changes taking place in the field of production, with the use of modern technology and outsourcing, is bringing down the existing working conditions, a race to the bottom. Studies show that the neo liberal system will not succeed in creating more jobs on a regular basis and decent working conditions”.

“This shows that the capitalist system has failed to offer a decent standard of living or a secure future for workers and their families.  Neo liberalism is the highest level of the economic system based on savage capitalism. This policy will lead to the final fall of the capitalist system”.

The Party reiterates that “the working class is uniting in solidarity against this regressive system, where profit precedes human dignity, standard of living, and the environment. The Party believes that the only way forward should be Socialism”.

The Communist Party salutes all the workers and encourages them to embrace the principle of solidarity, as the future has become an insecure one. This should lead towards the working class becoming more aware, and unite them against a system that no longer is in a position to offer a decent standard of living. The Capitalist system is based on the exploitation of the working class.

Communist Party of Malta appeals for full LGBT rights.

The Communist Party of Malta welcomes the formation of a Consultative council on LGBT rights. “This is a progressive step forward”, stated the Party.

The Party notes that “the upper and lower houses in France have just approved gay marriage. This law had the support of the Communist front in both houses. Other progressive countries in Latin America, such as Argentina and Uruguay have also approved gay marriage. These South American countries are all governed by a Left wing Administration. Other EU member countries like Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden have all introduced sex-same marriage”, stated the Party.

The Communist Party of Malta appeals to the Consultative council on LGBT to follow other progressive countries and revise its policy on civil union and instead propose same-sex marriage.

Margaret Thatcher’s legacy.

A Margaret Thatcher victim.

The Communist Party of Malta joins with other left and progressive forces who have expressed rage at the bourgeoisie media’s eulogies to Thatcher, as a great stateswoman.

“Margaret Thatcher together with Ronald Reagan will be remembered for the introduction of Milton Friedman’s and other notorious right wing gurus’ free market policies, which led to the privatisation of public services, dismantling of worker’s rights and the eventual collapse of the economic and social system”.

“Margaret Thatcher will also be remembered as a great friend of the Fascist General, Augusto Pinochet and for her support of South Africa’s Apartheid system, where she also described Nelson Mandela as a terrorist. Thatcher also used an iron fist against political prisoners in Northern Ireland, which through her intransigence led to the death of 19 prisoners who were on a hunger strike.”

“Her anti-union policies in 1984/85 led also to the break up of the miner’s strike by the use of military force and police violence. This resulted in the injuring of 20,000 miners, 13,000 arrested, 200 imprisoned, and two miners killed on picket lines.”

“Margaret Thatcher was also accused as being a war criminal due to the sinking of the ship ‘Belgrano’ during the ‘Malvinas War’”, concluded the Communist Party.

Harbouring of Military Vessels violate Malta’s Constitution.

The Communist Party of Malta condemns the visit of Chinese military vessels in Maltese Harbours, as these are not congenial with the Neutrality clause in the Maltese constitution.

“Malta should not continue to allow military warships in its territorial waters, and instead Malta should once again form part of the Non-Aligned Movement. Malta’s role should be to promote peace in the Mediterranean region”, stated the Party.

The Party said that “although China, as a country does not threaten sovereignty of other people, like western imperialism does, still the presence of military vessel in Malta goes against the spirit of the Maltese constitution.”

The Communist Party reiterates that “the new Labour Administration should not follow in the footsteps of the previous Nationalist Administration where US and NATO warships were allowed to make us of our facilities during conflicts in the regions.”

Malta’s position backs reactionary regimes

The Communist Party of Malta looks upon the government’s decision to recognize the Syrian Opposition National Coalition, the sole legal representatives of the Syrian people, as a rash decision. This is in line with imperialist policies.

“The government should have followed the Canadian President and recognize those secular forces, such as the ‘National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change’ whom truly belief in peace, equality, and democratization of society”, said the Party.

“The Syrian National Council is mainly made up of fundamentalists and foreign forces which many Syrians see them as a threat to the ethnic and religious populations that live in Syria. In fact the main countries that are backing these forces are those reactionary regimes who are staunch supporters of US imperialist policies in the region, such as Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.”

The communist movement and parties continues to support all those who believe in a secular state where all religions have a place in society. Till date the only alternative is a fundamentalist Islamic regime.
